The North Otago Times states that the Putiki, now trading to Oamaru, has engaged the services of a lady cook, who, it is stated, is giving every satisfaction.
The Postmaster-General has received notification of the establishing of an information bureau' for prisoners of war as follows: "Norsk Efterlysningskontor for- Krigsfanger, Hantseens Gate 4, Christiania." Any correspondence dispatched to the bureau will be free of postage.
Entries for the Flower Show at the Church of England Bazaar should be in to-day. Another attraction is to be an exhibition of fancy dancing by Miss Boyne and her little pupils. This Bazaar opens at midday on Wednesday and the admission thereto is a modest sixpence.
The Dunedin hotelkeepers with front or threepenny bars are increasing the price of long beers to f ourpence a glass as from Monday next. There is talk of increasing the price of spirits, nobblers from (id to 9d, but the increase has 'not yet been definitely decided upon.
The Premier has received from the High Commissioner the following cable ".The hemp controller now advises tIrST it is proposed to fix the maximum price of No. 2 hemp £1 a ton higher than the figures before mentioned. Tow fixed price follows: No. 1, £59 per ton; No. 2, £56; No. 3, £54.
The stage at which a man may be said to be drunk was seriously discussed by a Sub-Inspector, counsel and a witness in the New Plymouth Magistrate's Court. The witness had the final word. He remarked: "When a man goes to the pump to light his pipe, I should say he is drunk."
At the Addington saleyards on Wednesday three pure bred sows were sold on behalf of Mr. S. Humphreys (Tai Tapu), to Mr. McLean (Leithfield,) at 7 guineas each. These pigs were bred by Mr Nielsen of Palmerston North. A line of 32 prime baconers sent in by Mr. Leonard White (Rakaia) averaged nearly £3 per head.
There is an acute shortage of fat cattle in the Ashburton county at the present time, states the correspondent of the Lyttelton Times, and butchers are experiencing considerable difficulty in obtaining supplies. At the last sale at the yards, only two fat cows were submitted to auction, and these realised the substantial price of £l6 12s Gd. A few months ago, the same class of cows could have been." purchased for about £l2 a head. *
"The money spent on this war up to the present, would," said Mr. Poynton, Sj.M., in Palmerston, last night, "cut 100 Panama Canals, drain all the big swamps and irrigate all the deserts on the globe. At £IO,OOO a mile, it would rnlrke a million miles of railway, or one 40 times round the earth. This waste could not go on indefinitely and universal bankruptcy was inevitable if it continued much longer."
A telegram from Berlin states that on the occasion of gathering, when the Kaiser met the leaders of the parties in the Reichstag, the Kaiser vented his feelings freely, In conversation with Herr Payer, the Progressist leader, the Kaiser jsaid: "You )can r.egard the success of the submarine campaign as certain. Our experts promise that it will compel Great Britain to abandon the war To Payer and other deputies the Kaiser indulged in a violent abuse of the British, whom he denounced as a nation of brigands. He described the British Empire as the greatest organisation of infamy ever known in history.

A rewafd will be given the finder on returning to Mr.- D. Neagle. The book entitled "The Broken 1 Crutch," should be read by everyone suffering in anyway with rheumatism. It tells of something not hitherto generally known, and gives particulars about the very latest medical science on the subject. A social and dance is being organI ised by the people of Utiku, to be I held on October 4th, for the, benefit Jof the Nurses' Fund. Mrs. Kandolph, secretary, has matters well in hand, and judging by the interest already shown, a good balance will be handed over.
To-day is Dominion Day, but beyond the closing of the banks and a few of the business places, the occasion passed without any celebration. The children of the local school saluted the flag, which bore the names' of scbolars who had gone to the front and had the significance cf the ojc* sion explained to them by the teac-i----ers. The annual meeting of the Taihape Bowling Club -will be held in the Fire Brigade Hall this evening, at S o'clock. All members are requested to attend and intending members are cordially invited to be present. It is probable that the season will be formally opened on Thursday nest, and it is- desirable that new members should start as soon as possible. The green is in first-class condition, and indications point to a most Successful season..
The following picturesque incident has come to light in connection with the sinking of the Australian troopship Ballarat by a submarine:—A soldier boy was in the mess room of the transport writing a letter home. He told of the dangers past, and England already in sight. "I think,'' he wrote in great spirits, "v?e are—" and the tail of the "e" was carried a couple of inches up into the letter, as if his pencil had scored a deep, dark mark. Underneath was written quickly, but in a firm clear hand, '' Torpedoed. Will finish this if I am saved."
Entries for the Flower and Bulb Show on Wednesday, 26th inst, at the Town Hall in connection with St. Margaret's Church Bazaar are very encouraging for a first show. For the convenience of country exhibitors entries will be received up to 11 o'clock on Wednesday morning. Vases will be found for all exhibitors except those used for table decoration, which must be in readiness for judging by 12 o'clock. Any kind of basket can be made 4ise of for the "Decorated Basket." Great interest is being taken in this class as also with the decorated tables.
