A DENIAL.
To the Editor. Sir,Very reluctanlty I beg for space in your columns to give an emphatic denial to the rumour being spread about that I am receiving tion for my services as secretary of of the Red Cross.. I reluctant because it is a matter worthy of scorn were it only personal. But it has unfortunately had a very serious effect on some of our subscribers and for the -welfare of the Red Cross workmust come' before personal considerations. In any official position one isalways open to attacks ,of this nature and I have had my, portion—varying in range from inebriation to falsehood. B'elieving no one can ,hurt you biit yourself these efforts of little minds have failed to move mp. But in this case it is telling qn the Red Cross Funds and so I feel forced to speak. May I inform my “critics” (sic) that over a year ago I was. asked to take the position of secretary temporarily say for a month, unfst ; a more permanent appointment, could be made. No one rushed the jop. It is still open to my critics to step into. I am still temporary secretary. If any justification is needed for that I can only point to financial results of the year and the smoothness and quietness of its working. Even if the’credit of this i s in no -way due to me at least I have not "spoiled” it. Is it necessary to add that I expected no payments or perquisites, nor would I take them? To have to make this statement is painful to me but it reveals the measure of some peoples’ souls. I am, etc., z W. F. STENT.
