FOOTBALL MATCHES

A return match between the Baetihi and Taihape football 1 teams was; played on the Kecreation Ground on Saturday. The travelling expenses of the Eaetihi team amounting to £l2 were paid by the members of the Taihape team'and a few of their friends. The Taihape footballers are to be congratulated under the circumstances in refusing to take the takings at the match for football purposes. The proceeds of the match were donated to the Nurses' Fund, and judging by the energy put into the collection by Mrs. Dr. Boyd, Sister Bremner, and Nurses Merritt (Huia), Austin (Hula) and Merritt (Euanui) a substantial sum should result. For a start the ground was very greasy and the ball difficult to handle, but as the afternoon advanced 3|he ground and baO improved. In first spell play was fairly even, the Taihape team finishing up with a 3 points' lead. The play in the first spell was uninteresting, the Taihape team failing to open up, and, lost numerous opportunities of scoring by wild passing. In the second spell the ball was thrown about in good style, with the result that play was fast and op»:n. The Taihape team had all the bosc of the play and scored three times and en numerous occasions, just first failed to ground the ball. Tries were scored by Windsor, H.. - tham, Chase, and Mnaoj; non 3 of the tries were converted. A feature of the play was the splendid disp'ay given hy the Eaietihi captain, J. Tii:roa at full back. He played a safe game and continually got his side out of tight corners. i\s ui exhibition of full back play it is prob.tbiy the best that has been witno»s*d in Taihape The best players on the Taihapa side were Eaton, Chase, Maher (backs) ;ind Salmon, Keliy, McSweeney and Campball [forwards). Mr. D/ Burrell capably controlled the game which was played in the best of spirits.
