MONASTIR BOMBARDED BY BULGARS. . Received 9.35. LONDON, August 20. Serbian official: The Bulgarians violently bombarded Monastir. Numersivilians were killed. Many women and children are homeless. AUSTRIAN AFFAIRS. AUSTRIA WANTS PEACE. USING THE POPE’S INFLUENCE. ROME, August 20. The “Giornae” states that the Austrian Empress, prior to the Papal Note, actively corresponded with the Pope, imploring peace proposals. Germany was aware of the preliminaries, but took no direct part. The Pope intended to close his Note with a proposal for a general armisice, but Vienna considered this inopportune, as revealing the Central Powers’ weakness. FEREMASONS AT WORK. NEW YORK, August 20. ' The “Tribune” publishes a cable from Mr Garvin, editor of the “Observer,” stating that Freemasons are working secretly on peace terms agreed upon by Masonic delegates of the Entente Allies, and are ready* to launch a great peace effort to combat the Vatican and Stockholm efforts. effort will bo to the effect that: “We will negotiate after victory, not before.”
