EDUCATION BOARD.

The Wanganui Education Board met on Wednesday evening. Owing to the school site at Raurimu being without an approach, the Board some time ago applied to the Public Works Department to form a road in the section. —-A letter -was received from th e Department stating that £IOO was to be spent on the work. The Board’s Foreman has already made a track in to get the timber for the new building on to the section. It was decided to acquire land for a school at Moawhango at the Government valuation.—The trustees of the late Mr. Bailey’s estate to be asked to carry out the terms of the latter’s last letter. 1

In regard to the establishment of a model country school for. the training of teachers, th e Education Department while favouring the proposal, stated that the legislation in regard to the matter was defective, but steps would be taken to have that remedied. The Board decided to inform the Department that no objection was taken with the Dominion grading scheme for the appointment of teachers, except with regard to the quota marks, which were inequitable and unjust. The Minister of Education, in reply to the Board V representations, pointed out that steps were being taken to provide an increased grarit ( for the maintenance and re-erection of school buildings, owing to enhanced cost of material. i

,The Chairman of the National Efficiency Board (Mr. W. Ferguson) wrote in praise of the manner in which the inculcating of national sentiment was carried out in the schools of the district.

. .It was decided not to accede to the request of the Mangaweka Committee to commence school holidays on December I, so that pupils could assist in the shearing, but to grant leave to boys in St. VI. where cases of employment. in farm work were authenticated.

Mr. S. Lorking, who holds the appointment of headteacher at. Kakahi and has been absent on leave for about two years, part of the time at the war, but recently as clerk at the Base Records Office in Wellington, refused to agree to the Board’s suggestion to resume duty or to forward his resignation. —It was decided that he must resume duty at once or forward a medical certificate that he was unfit.
