IN THE AIR.
AIR RAID ON ENGLAND. 20 AEROPLANES PARTICIPATE. LONDON, August 12. A squadron of twenty enemy aeroplanes this afternoon, skirted the coast towards Clacton, where they divided, a part turning. Margate. The remainder crossed the coast and dropper bombs in the neighbourhood of Southend, also: Margate. Reports as to damage or casualties have not yet been received. Our aircraft pursued the enemy seawards. RAIDERS DRIVEN OFF. LONDON, August 13. Enemy aeroplanes were seen approaching at a great height. Numbers of airmen ascended from Clacton and Margate to meet them. Sharp fighting followed. Anti-aircraft guns were also busy from Margate. The enemy were driven seawards after dropping four bombs on the eastern part of the town.
23 KILLED AND 50 INJURED. LONDON, August 12. The Press Bureau reports: The raiders caused considerable damage at Southend, where they dropped forty bombs. The casualties at present reported are eight men, nine women and six children killed and about 50 injured. Two men were injured at Rochford. An uninhabited house at Margate was demolished, but ! therte fvere no casualties. <,"'••
