LONDON", August 11. Wireless Russian official.—Dense enemy waves attacked our positions in the region of the villages of Dub and Zarkov. A battle is progressing. We beat off an attack southward of / the Pruth river, one of our battalions forcing its way into the village of Yukovica and compelling the enemy to retire. We regained the heights lost on Wednesday south of Wammany. The enemy forced the Roumanians to retire south-west of Mona. A later report states that the enemy’s partial offensive in the direction of Brody was a complete failure, being everywhere repulsed with great losses. PRISONERS DIE OF .STARVATION. IN THE CENTRAL COUNTRIES. Received 1030 NEW YORK, August 12 An official cable from a neutral country, contiguous to Germany, states that economic conditions in Germany and Austria and Hungary are most serious. Newspapers express regret that prisoners in Austria and Hungary die of starvation in ever-increasing numbers, owing to the inability of their keepers to obtain food for them. The New York Times’ Washington correspondent has learned that the Allies will soon begin a series of conferences for the purpose of harmonising plans and co-ordinating efforts on all fronts; also for securing more aggressive naval action. DETERMINED AERIAL FIGHTING. EXTENSIVE BOMBING OPERATIONS. LONDON, August 11. Sir Douglas Haig reports: We were slightly driven back at Glencorse Wood. The day’s flying finally resulted in six and a half tons of bombs being dropped in enemy territory. Fifteen German machines were brought down and twelve of ours are missing. URUGUAY ABANDONS NEUTRALITY. WASHINGTON, August 11. The State Department has received Uruguay’s official declaration that she does not regard the United States as a belligerent. This means that Uruguay is no longer neutral.
