WILL RESUME ONWARD MARCH.
WITH REGENERATED ARMIES
PETROGRAD, August 2
The Foreign Minister has circularised the Allies, declaring the necessary steps will be taken to restore the combative strength of the Russian armies. The Government will not be deterred by the difficulties of prosecuting the war to the final triumph of the principles, of the Russian revolution, knowing that their liberty and that of all mankind depends upon their efforts. Reorganised and regenerated armies will, at the appointed hour, resume the onward march to victory. General Tcheremiroff has been appointed commander-in-chief of the armies in the south-western front. TURN OF THE TIDE. LONDON, August 3. The Times 7 correspondent at the Russian south-western headquarters, cabling on July 30th, says the rupture in the front has been mended. The Russians lost in eleven days ninety miles of territory between Ivalusz (N.E. of Stanislau) and Husiatyn (on the eastern border of Galicia). The German offensive is apparently directed towards Kamenetz, Podolsk aid Odessa. ANOTHER SERIES OF REVERSES. LONDON August 2. Wireless Russian official. —Between the Zbrucz and the Dneister our troops abandoned positions north-eastward of Hotin. Between the Dneister and the Pruth the enemy made an offensive along our bank of the Dneister and occupied a number of positions, w e retiring westwards. We fell back west of the Putna river. We drove the enemy back near Moldavica. Wo fell back slightly in the region of Mounts Pucha and Lamentulu. *
THE SITUATION VERY DARK. PETROGRAD, August 2. There has been a continuous joint session of the Workmen’s, Soldiers and Peasants ’ delegates since Sunday. There are also added 100 provincial delegates and representatives from all fronts Socialists Ministers are also participating. The reports of aymr delegates are very grave. Representatives of second, ninth, and tweflth. armies re-, ported that war weariness was .the real cause of the disorganisation of the whole army. The delegates recommend stern repressive measures, which are necessary to strengthen the position of the army. The committees while praising the chivalry of the lower grade officers and delegates, declare that the frame of mind of the higher command was opposed to the revolution.
PALESTINE CAMPAIGN. FALKENHAYN GOES TO TURKEY. LONDON, August 2. General von Falkenhayn (ex-Com-mander-in-Chief of the German army) has been appointed commander of the Turkish forces. He has established his headquarters at Aleppo, and has inspected the Gaza front. HOLLWBG’S RETIREMENT. ROME, August 2. Herr von Bethraann Hollweg has retired to his country estate, He is writing his memoirs, covering his seven years’ chancellorship. .CANADA’S FOOD RESTRICTIONS.. OTTAWA, ’August 2. The Food Controller has announced two meatless and two baeonless days weekly. *
