LABOUR AND LIQUOR.
A FATAL BLUNDER,
WELLINGTON, July 24. Through the retirement of the member for Lyttelton from the New land Labour party will not have a very definite effect upon the course of the Dominion's politics, Mr. McCoombs' "treasons for breaking with his political are interesting. His objection is that the party has passed a resolution in favour of State control of the liquor traffic. "I am convinced that the Labour party in New Zealand will make a fatal blunder by taking the initiative in this matter," says the member, for Lyttelton in a letter to the secretary of the Labour Board. "To attempt to nationalise a trade which half the people want to see wiped out is bad tactics in the first place, and in the second place it is a bad beginning for the national ownership on monopolies to take over a business which, to make a financial success, would spell the greater hurt of the people. The greater the financial success the greater the hurt.''
