In the course of a strongly expressed opinion respecting the liquor trade in the House yesterday afternoon, Mr Isitt paid a tribute to the Minister of Munitons. “I have watched the Min-

Reuter’s correspondent who has visited the American Contingent in France telegraphs: Our - new Allies are fine, hefty young fellows, mostly recruited from the farm lands of Texas, where the American army found itself at the outbreak of the war. An officer with whom I had a talk, said: “These fellows are new to war, but are of a fighting breed. They will pull out right when once they have faced the Boches. All they want now is to get done with drills, and have a bit of real fighting. I don’t think the I Allies will be ashamed of us.” My impression, after visiting the camps, and having talks with officers and men, is that America means serious business, and the Germans will soon need to reckon with these Texan cowboys.
The police raids on reservists in Wellington on Monday caused a great flutter in the dovecotes. The evening raids were the most interesting. The main theatres had their doors flanked by imposing arrays of Constables. The scene at the vestibule of the Grand Opera House was an interesting, if not amusing one. The humble man who had booked himself for the “gods” had to wait at the policeman’s bidding along with the dress-suited theatre-goer with ladies at his side. The predicament of the latter w r as particularly embarrassing. To turn out one’s pocket for an enrolment card that is not there is not exactly a pleasant occupation when the audience is a lady friend, a policeman, and impatient theatre-patrons in the background. This was the plight of many a young man on Monday night. , Of course, if the card was not there, the note-book was produced and questions had to be answered. There was a particularly large crowd at the Opera House, so that the evening was a profitable one for the police.
