FOOTBALL MATCHES

On Saturday a football match was played between a team representing The Taihape District Maoris and Pakehas. There was a good attendance of spectators and the day was an ideal one for football. A very good game resulted and the spectators were treated to some fine open play. With a little more form the Maoris would have been a match for the Pakehas and in the first spell held their own.

The first spell finished with scores five all, a good try by Munro converted by MeSweeney evening up a try, converted by the Maoris. In the second spell the Pakehas played better than the Maoris who. showed lack of conditions, two further tries were scored for the Pakehas as a result of good forward rushes by McDermott and Windsor. The Maoris failed to score in the second spell and the game resulted in a win for the Pakehas by 11 points to 5. The best players amongst the Pakcha backs -were E. Eaton, W. Murphy, and Teasey and amongst the forwards Wilson, McDermott, J. Murphy, Windsor and Campbell. 'Amongst the Maoris the best players were Chase, Pini, Takarangi, Salmon and Panga. Mr. W. Kclsall made an efficient referee.
