DEAR MEAT IN LONDON.

CHARGES OF PROFITEERING. LONDON June 5. The ceaseless increase in the price of foodstuffs has resulted in the widespread belief that profiteering is rampant, and is creating unrest throughout Britain. The Railwaymen’s Conference passed a resolution demanding more drastic Government action. Lord Inchcape. in a letter to the Times, states that the total cost of Australian beef delivered at the quay in London is 6 3-S a pound, and mutton 6 5-8, proving that neither the Australian farmer, the proprietor of the meatworks, nor the shipowner is a profiteer. The London Star says that though New Zealand meat is landed at Sd per lb, the English profiteers are making exorbitant profits from Australasian meat selling it at Is od to Is lOd. Home grown mutton and lamb are retailed at 2s 4d a lb.
