TWO FRENCH STEAMERS UN-
SUCCESSFULLY ATTACKED. PARIS, June 17.
Official.—Two French steamers report that they were attacked by large submarines near the Spanish coast, outside the declared blockade zones. Both successfully maintained an artillery duel, obliging the attackers to abandon the struggle. LONDON, June 18.
The Admiralty denies the German wireless report that a German submarine sank an English destroyer of the L class in the Mediterranean on the 11th inst. BIGGER VESSELS SELECTED. LONDON, j UQ e IT. Captain Bathurst, of the Food Control Department, states that there is no diminution of the submarine activity. The enemy is selecting vessels of heavier tonnage, a fact which the official returns do not make clear to the public. The main reason that fewer ships have been sunk is due to the arming of merchantmen. There was little hope of an improved sugar supply. Two months ago, in ten days, 40,000 tons of sugar were sunk.
