SPORTS AT RANGATAUA.
The axemen of Rangatn.ua organised a local carnival for Saturday, May 5, on the Domain, Rangataua, and, being favoured with fine weather had a record local attendance. The committee worked with a will and provided an ample supply of excellent blocks, and the various events resulted in Mptefesting competitions and very closet-finishes. • A bahhwas held in the evening and proved ha- great ' success; one of the principal features being an auction sale, at which the “Champion” axe, donated by Mr. W. T. Stewart, realised £5 13s. A Following are the results of the competitions:—■ Twelve-inch Maiden Standing Chop. —J. Bentley 1, Morgan 2. Twelve-inch Open Standing Chop.—• Sturzaker 1, T. Curtis 2. Single Hand Sawing.—W. Collier 1. Nine-inch Standing Railway Chop.—J. Cronk 1, W. Maloney 2. Tug of War—Railway team 1, Wilson’s: team 2. Chain stepping.—W. Taylor 1. 75 yards Handicap.—J( Casey 1. Tradesmen’s Chop.—J. Casey T, R. Neilson 2. Ladiejs’ Sawing Reynolds} and Mrs. Ellis 1, Mrs. Erb and Mrs' Taylor 2.
