TOMMY’S SUPREMACY,

HUN OUTCLASSED AS FIGHTER,

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, in an .article in the ‘ ‘Daily Chronicle ’ ’ in support of the contention that British soldiers have completely gained supremacy over the Germans, showed that while Germany holds 34,000 British prisoners, Britain holds 70,000 Germans. The British guns captured by Germans do not exceed 70, while the British have captured over 400 of theirs.

The High Commissioner reports:— A French communique states: North of the Aisne, the enemy, under our energetic pressure continued to fall back towards Chemin des Dames. In the region of Haute Bis, after a lively combat we captured the point in support northwards, taking 330 prisoners, and capturing two gnus .105 millimetres. West oi Bergericourt we made considerable progress in the region of Marsif and Moronvillcrs. We extended our positions north of Mont Haut, repulsing two German counterattacks. In this region and in Mount Cotinilla (north-west of ’Auberivc) we brilliantly carried on a front of two kilometres, a system of strongly organised trenches, repelling the enemy to the southern outskirts of Vaudcsineourt. GOOD PROGRESS DESPITE BAD WEATHER. LONDON, April 20. The ‘ ‘ Times ’ ’ correspondent at the French headquarters says:. Despite most abominable weather—fain, sleet, and snow, claiming the shcel-plpnghed soil into morasses, making air work impossible, and greatly hampering the infantry, we have considerably advanced in half-a-dozen different sectors at St. Quentin and Champagne, repelling coun-ter-attacks so effectively that we either killd or prisonered in several attacks every man. A French communique states: The enemy artillery was active last night south of St. Quentin, and ours vigorously replied. We appreciably progressed in Lafi’aux Region, and repulsed several counter-attacks in this sector. We carried several trenches in Vuachcl Plateau and south-east of Courcy. We gained ground east of Loivro. Our barrage and machinc-gun fire nullified tiirce strong counter-attacks in the Moronvillies region, with the heaviest enemy losses. Ten enemy aeroplanes have been downed since April 36th.

A Zurich wireless message states tliat the Grand Vizier lias arrive at Berlin with a view of making urgent representations as to the seriousness of Turkey’s position and her inability to continue in the war effectively unless all Turkish troops in Galicia and Roumania arc withdrawn, and a substantial number of Austrians and Bulgarians arc immediately sent to aid Turkey.
