Austrian position seized.
ROME, April 19.
An Italian official message says: “Our heavy bombardment caused great fires at Galliano station in the Lagarina Valley, five miles north of Eiveretto. We seized a position north of Castagnavizza, in the Trentino, capturing the defenders.
GEEMAN INTERNAL AFFAIRS BERLIN STRIKE. HOW IT WAS SETTLED. AMSTERDAM, April 19. The Socialist newspaper ‘ Vonvaerts’ states that the Berlin strike was only
ended after substantial concessions had been extorted from the Food Commissioner, who was forced to promise that rations would be more fairly distributed hoarded provisions commandeered, and profitmaking, of which the bitterest complaints had been made, prohibited.
WAR NEARING AN END. RUSSIAN REVOLUTION ASSISTED GERMANY.

AMSTERDAM, April 20. -Wj., Herr Kaempf, President of the Reieh- ; stag, addressing the Progressive, said the war was nearing an end. The Russian revolution had boon an advantage to Germany, and the Kaiser’s Eastern peace message was gaining ground. Kaempf disagreed with those desiring to conquer as much as possible. He was. satisfied if only they safeguarded their frontiers. Germans liked to live in peaceful competition with other nations, but refused to allow American interference. The meeting passed a resolution of indignation at President \\ ilson’s attempt to now discord between ' the Kaiser and his people.
FOOD EXPECTATIONS. MUNITIONERS STILL STRIKING. Received 9.10. AMSTERDAM, April 20. Herr Batocke, the Food Dictator, states that since January life in the large towns had been difficult, and the severity of the winter had increased the difficulties; but the Tee on the Danube had now melted, and Roumanian supplies were arriving regularly. Reports of tie winter corn crops were favourable.
The newspaper Vorwaerts, states
that despite the advice of the leaders ,Agreat numbers of Berlin munitioners were still striking.
STRIKES IN GERMANY. LONDON, April 20. Berlin semi-official. —The telegram announcing the termination of the great strike of munition workers on Monday is now admitted to have been premature. German papers state that a quarter of a million workers and five factories were still idle on Wednesday. A meeting of striker s on Thursday resolved not to resume but to send a deputation to the Chancellor. Various strikes 'occurred iat Leipsig on Monday and Tuesday. There was also a great demonstration at Stoetletitz as a protest against the scarcity of food.

GERMAN - PRESS FILLED WITH CONSTERNATION.
LONDON, April 19. A wireless says German newsfilled with consternation at the social change in Austrian policy, some declaring that Germany has been betrayed. It has not yet been disclosed what has happened in Austria.
