MILITARY SERVICE.
BUSHMEN’S OFFER REFUSED
WELLINGTON, April 11
An Auckland gentleman, with a j knowledge of bushj-felling, recently I offered to get together a contingent of experienced axemen, whose services, according to news received from Eng- I land, would be of value in France. En- j ormous quantities of light timber are ' grown in the Bayonne district for use | in the coal mines of South Wales as pit props, and it was considered that New Zealand axemen over the military service age could do the work in these French forests, releasing’ men of military age who might have to be re-„ tained in that occupation.
The matter was considered by Cabinet, and it was decided that the offer could not be entertained.
