The meetings of householders for the election of school committees will oe held this year on April 30th. The police on Wednesday arrested a man said to be in the Government service, on a charge of forgery. His name has not been divulged, but it is understood that the man had about £2OOO in his possession when arrested. British officers may be said to make comparatively little use of their •pistols during fighting. The officer’s most valuable duty lies in leading and and directing his men, not so much in himself actually taking toll of +he foe. At , the meeting of the Wanganui Education Board on Wednesday, permission was granted to the following teachers to continue in the service after marriage, provided their work is satisfactory: Misses 8. Broughton (Taihape), T. Macdonald (Rano-a-taua). and V. Brook e (Ohakune).

It is reported that there were over 650 motor cars at the Opunake races on Saturday. The roads leading to the course showed an immense procession of cars. The Government has received hundreds of applications for financial assistance to soldiers to enable them to meet liabilities, such as interest on mortgages and insurance premiums, which cannot be met out of ordinary pay. The limit of such assistance is £2 per week, and the grant is made after report from a Military Service Board to the Minister of Defence, who has the final responsibility. As the work is too heavy for the Minister to undertake alone, the Minister intends to set up a carefully selected Board to deal with these claims.
