GALA DAY AT RUANUI.
FETE AND GYMKHANA.
Great preparations are being made for a very large attendance at the forthcoming Ruanui fete and gymkhana in aid of Red Cross work. It is well that every man and woman, not only in the Taihape district, but throughout New Zealand and the whole Empire should realise that a new offensive is about to be commenced in all the theatres of the war when our own men and those or our allies will be mown down in numbers. Red Cross efforts mean that we are trying to save as many of our unfortunate lads as possible. By the interest we take and by what we can afford to give to succour the lads in their a & on J’j we can be the means of saving many valuable lives. This great effort at Ruanui is not a hole-and-corner affair; every farmer in the district is asked to be present and help with his contribution in cash, in sheep or other live stock to be auctioned, or in produce to be sold; while ladies can render great assistance with contributions of cakes and other edibles suitable for the luncheon and afternoon tea. The promoters would be grateful for any gift and for any assistance that may be rendered. To the pleasure-seeker who is willing to buy enjoyment and contribute to the great, humane cause, the Ruanui fete and gymkhana will provide a surfeit. The horse-jumping competitions are TTSing patronised by almost every man in the neighbourhod who has a jumping horse, and it is on the cards that around the jumping will centre the “circus” of the whole affair.
Ruanui public functions have gained an envious notoriety for the thoroughness with which they are organised, for the absence of their formality, and the out-and-out enjoyableness of every minute they last. The <’ete next Thursday will probably be the last which will be organised by Mr. J. F. Studholme, and that being so the whole district is endeavouring to make it one of the most successful for Red Cross purposes that has yet been held. Many Taihape people are signifying their intention of being present, and to avoid disappointment about getting there arrangements should be made at Mr. C. E. Kelly’s Stables.
