The Defence Department is drawing attention to Section 33 of the Military Service Act, which requires that the young men of New Z'ealand shall enrol in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force Reserve en attaining the age of 21 years. A general order instructs officers commanding districts to see that it is read once a fortnight, during the period of the war, .at the parades Cadets and Territorials. Every young man who is not already enrolled should apply for a form of enrolment at a post office as soon as possible after his 20th birthday. Record prices were obtained at the Hawke's Bay Ram Fair, which concluded on Friday. In Lincoln stud rams, three shearlings realised 50gs each, and a two-shearling 72gs. A Romney stud shearling, bred by Mr. J. S. Hewitt, of Mangamare, was' purchased by Mr. C. Field (Gisbornc) at 240»5. The hig-hest price realised in flock Romneys was for five shearlings bred by Mr. B. Bland-Raynor, which were sold to Mr. Collins (Otane) for 500-s each. Other good quality flock Romneys realised from £l3 to £l3O. Buyers were present from all parts of the Dominion.
There is an acute shortage of coal and firewood in Taihape at the present time. It is understood that there are nine cases to come before the Military Appeal Board at its Taihape sitting, which commences on Wednesday, in the Courthouse. The country round about Wakefield (says the Nelson Evening Mail) is at present in a rather bad way owing to tlie continued dry spell. Although rain has fallen in different parts of the district, Wakefield has had next to none since November last.
