We ar e pleased to state that Mr Bishop, of the Cash Drapery, has recovered from hi s recent illness, and has resumed the conduct of his business. A man named John Clark appeared at the Taihape Courthouse, before Mr. J. P. Aldridge, J.P., this morning, charged with stealing £22 from Herbert Jackson, a fellow-boarder. The accused was remanded till February 1. A thief, or. thieves, recently visited the farm of Mr Clarence Mills, Pelorus Sounds, and stole six bales of wool. The theft is all the more shameful owing to the fact that the brothers Mills, who were in charge of the place, are fighting for. their country in France.

A Taranaki settler, who has just returned from a trip to Marlborough, states that he met a farmer there whohad taken off one piece of land three crops of lucerne, and he expected to cut two more. The crops averaged four tons to the acre, valued at £l6, which shows the possibility of growing this rapid-growing fodder on suitable land.

The latest return from the Discharged Soldiers' Information Department shows that of (5592 men registered, the cases of 555 S have been disposed of. The cases under consideration number 595, including 110 at present on the '' employment wanted'' register. There are 22 located at Auckland, five at Napier, six at Wellington, and twelve at Dunedm.

The other day 100 stooks of wheat lying on the farm of Mr. J. Craigie, M.P. for Tirnaru. situated at Kingsdown (South Canterbury) were ecmpletely destroyed by lire. The fire evidently originated from a spark from a passing locomotive, and in addition to burning the wheat, destroyed a quantity of cocksfoot, which was growing along the railway line, and also the posts of the fence.

The paragraph in Saturday's paper, in which we stated that Dr. Serpell, of Mangaweka, had been called up Tor military service, requires some explanation. It appears that Dr. Serpell, who has been connected with the military forces for some years, went to Wellington last week and offered his services to the military authorities, which were immediately accepted. He was appointed Surgeon-Captain, and attached to the 22nd Reinforcements, which leave New Zealand at an early date.
