PICNIC AT HIHITAHI.
Booth's Mill hands' annual picnic eventuated yesterday about a mile south, of Hihitahi. The people from Quinn's Mill and Gardner's Mill, with their wives and children, also took part, making up a total of about two hundred. The weather throughout the day wag glorious. A more favourable spot for. a picniccould hardly be wished for. On one side of the stream was a large, open spot, suitable for the races and chopping events, while on the other side there was light bush, where refreshments were laid on the grass. The stream itself provided water for cooking and drinking purposes, to say nothing of bathing, if time for such could have been found between the. various events. A small foot bridge was erected across the stream in the morning, for the purposes of the picnic. Amongst the events were children's races, married women's race, women's tug-of-war, standing chop, and underhand chop. A feature of the afternoon was a race in which several men were covered with pieces of paper, a prize being offered to the child who could get the largest number of pieces of paper. The men presented a very funny sight running about the park with a swarm of children after, them. 'At dinner time a very appetising spread was laid on the grass, and the ladies were most attentive to the wants of the men and children. Altogether a most enjoyable day was spent, and the picnic speaks volumes for the good feeling prevailing amongst the scattered population.
