TAIHAPE BOROUGH COUNCIL
The usual monthly meeting of the Borough Council was hold on Friday evening. Present: Crs H. D. Bennett, R. Healey, J. R. Cunninghame, and Turnbull. In the unavoidable absence of his Worship the Mayor (Mr Arrowsmith) Cr Bennett was voted to the chair. An application from the Rangltikei A. and P. Association for permission to use the Recreation Grounds on February 2Sth for their Summer Show was received. —Application granted on the usual conditions. E. Savill was appointed Dog Registrar for the borough for the coming year. A special meeting of the council will he held on January 31 for the purpose of deciding what working day shall be fixed as the statutory half holiday. It was decided, on the motion of Cr Bennett, seconded by Cr Turnbull, that the picture theatres in the borough be closed on Sundays, and that the licenses to exhibit pictures on Sunday evenings be cancelled as from January 31st. The treasurer’s report was read, showing: District Fund a/c, Dr balance £3553 18s 7d: Interest a/c, Dr £302 Ids (id; temporary loans, Dr £110; Loan a/c No. 1, Dr £OOI 6s Od; Loan a/c No. 3,. Dr £203 3s lid; Oval Domain a/c, Cr £l3 0s Sdßeport adopted.
Accounts amounting to £3OO 9s wcm passed for payment. The Fire Brigade made an application to have fire alarms installed in the houses of certain members of the Brigade. —The council could not see its way to grant the application, but decided that in the event of four members of the Brigade, having at least two years’ service, installing telephones at their residences, the council was prepared to contribute £2 per annum per telephone. A request from the Fire Brigade to have the fire bell speeded up was left in the hands of the electrical engineer to deal with.
The council authorised the electrical engineer, in company with the captain of the Fire Brigade, to enquire and find out the quantity of explosives stored in the borough, and the exact positions where they were kept. This step was taken as a precautionary measure m the case of fire to enable the brigade to have the knowledge necssary for the most efficient coping with any outbreak of fire that may occur.
A communication was received from the Taihape Tradesmen's Association requesting the council to consider the advisability of charging a higher fee to casual traders within the borough. The matter was referred to the Works Committee to report on at next meet-
