PAHIATUA, Jan 17. Ernest Hughes, a Pongaroa baker, was fined £5 for selling short-weight bread. Thomas Hopcroft, manager of the Pongaroa Dairy Factory, was fined £2 for light-weight butter. Percy Kent, storekeeper, on a similar charge was fined £l. Harry Nayicr, lor keeping liquor for sale in the no-lic-ense area at Pongaroa, was fined -V-SO. D. M. Colquhoun, a Makairo seller, was fined £5 for failing to clear foxglove. WANG-AN'JI, Jan 17. Michael Ansley, oaker, of Victoria Avenue, was charged by the inspector (Mr. Pargeter) under the Pure Foods Act with having sold short-weight bread. Defendant pleaded guilty. His Worship, in imposing a fine-of £lO, said that in these and especially at this time, one could not "tinker with penalties." If a person was not fined heavily for this class of effence he was apt to take advantage of it.
