HUNGARIAN LOSSES.
A report was recently issued by the Hungarian National Committee entrusted with the care of the graves of fallen soldiers, in which it is stated that researches in the Northern Carpathians have resulted in the discovery of altogether 200,000 graves of Austro-Hun-garian and German soldiers. Of these over 35,000 were common graves, where more than one body is interred. The figures given indicate that during the winter of 1914-15 over 250,000 men were killed on the battlefields of that region—a fact never before revealed, says the Buda-Pesth correspondent of the London Morning Post. The publication of the report in question, therefore, has caused the greatest depression, for it is well known that the majority of the units who were engaged there against the Eussians were composed of Hungarians, only a small fraction of the forces being Germans and Austrians. "From Orsova to Uzsok Pass the Carpathians are a vast cemetery,' • says the report, and 7000 men are being employed in identifying the graves and restoring them. "The work has to be completed before the snow covers everything over and the floods wash away all traces of the resting places of those who have fallen."
