Replying to a Central News representative, a high official of the \ aticau stated the Holy See’s attitude is unchanged, and continues to observe scrupulous neutrality, but the Pope is unable to refrain from examining the belligerents’ war methods. It is impossible to avoid the conclusion that Germany’s and Austria’s unwarrantable atrocious acts have far exceeded anything whereof the Entente has been guilty. The Pope felt he must show some consideration to Francis Josef, who deserved well of the Church, but sees no reason to tolerate the crimes committed in the new Emperor’s name.
