BRITISH SHIPBUILDING.
NEW DIRECTOR GETTING TO WORK. LONDON, Jan. .10. Sir L. MeLay has begun work energetically. He has arranged for the rapid acceleration of the construction of new tonnage. Every ship yard on the east coast and west coast will very shortly be working at utmost capacity. Additional labour will be made available, especially for ships ncaring completion. The greater part of the boats to be constructed will be utilised for cargo purposes. Another immense prospect is the construction of vessels of great tonnage as naval auxiliaries. These will be standardised ships of simple design which can be constructed with the utmost rapidity. When commissioned they will release more than an equal number of merchantmen now in the naval service. It is expected that piecework will be introduced as a war measure throughout the shipyards. It has been found that piece workers produce more than fifty per cent, more than the day workers.
