We forced the enemy beyond the Sereth and continued our progress north of Rimnicul Sarat. SITUATION IMPROVED. . LONDON, Jan. 10. The “Daily Telegraph’s’ 7 Rome correspondent says: The Roumanian legation states that the situation on the Moldavian front has improved. The evacuation of Galatz and the consolidation of the Sereth-Pruth line were the i main objects of the recent battles. The . German losses were colossal. THE PEEDEAL ARMY’S FATE. NOT CAPTURED. LONDON, Jan. 11. Mr Brawn sends from Jassy the first authoritative account of the fate of the Predeal army, which the Germans alleged was captured. He says he witnessed the retreat of the whole army, under the command of General Avcrescu. who is now commandcn-in-chicf in Roumania. King Ferdinand ordered a retreat from the Carpathians when the heights guarding Bucharest were abandoned. General Ovcrcscu withdrew slowly, maintaining contact with the enemy, using his artillery until the infantry was safe, when the gnus were destroyed and abandoned. The rearguards were also sacrificed. The Predeal divisions have since :i oug.it prominently. STUBBORN FIGHTING PROCEED ING. Received 10.15. LONDON, Jan 11. A Russian wireless official states: Fighting continues to the south of Lake Babit. We captured a village east of Kalucem. The enemy captured two heights north of Utuz River. The Roumanians fell back to the south-east of Mokistuka and Kachinul, also northeast of Kimpulledbus. The enemy cessed the Putna north of Focsani, but our counter-attacks threw them back with heavy losses.
