THE STRANDED MAITAI.

A TOTAL LOSS. 400 TONS OF CARGO TAKEN OFF. DUNEDIN, Jan. 2. A wireless message received by the head office of the Union Company from Captain McLean, master, of the Maitai, states that the position of the vessel on the reef at Rarotonga is very bad. The engine room and stokehold are flooded. The crew succeeded in landing all stores and fittings, and 400 tons of cargo. A steamer on the way from England had called at Rarotonga and taken the mails, passengers, and the majority of the Maitai's crew. He feared that the Maitai is a total loss.
