* FACING THE POSITION". Received 9.25 LONDON, Jan. 2. Sir Alfred Booth, chairman of the Cunard Line,i protests against the continuance of the waste of tonnage. It is not only necessary to cut down luxuries in the country but we must reduce exports of great staples, including cot ton, wool, and wood and abandon the transit trade which makes great demands on cargo space, port facilities, and labour. „ Other shipping experts urge the drajjltie cutting down of imports of tobacco, whereof manufacturers have three years' supply; railways to greatly reduce the train services throughout the United Kingdom, and increase practically all fares fifty per cent, except season-tickets for workmen. MOKE SINKINGS. ' LONDON, Jan: 1. The British steamer Apsley Hall, the Russian Tuskar, and the Norwegian Exda, were sunk. The British steamer Protector; the Norwegian Eva and Flora; the Greek Demetries and Onglessis, and the Russian schooner Seedonis were sunk.
