HEAVY INCOME TAX. MELBOURNE, Dec. 19. In tlic House of Representatives Mr Boynton moved a 25 per cent, increase to the present Income Tax. The Federal Treasurer submitted a new tax, which, he stated, would in many instances more likely mean an increase of 100 rather than 25 per cent. The now tax is to operate as from July last. The bill passed all stages. HEAVY CHARGES ON WHEAT. MELBOURNE, Dec. 19. Mr Hughes, speaking in the House of Representatives, stated that in consequence of the scancity of freight it is costing as much to dispatch a bushel of wheat to England as the farmers received for it under the pool scheme. PLENTY OF GAS AGAIN. SYDNEY, Dec. 19. A 1 restrictions'regarding the use of gas have been removed. LAND FOR SOLDIERS. BRISBANE, Dec. 19. The State 'Assembly read the Discharged Soldiers' 'Settlement Bill a first°time. The bill empowers the Government to acquire any land for the settlement of soldiers. It also provides tor advances up to £SOO for assisting discharged soldiers, inpayment extending over forty years.
