FOR RETURNED SOLDIERS.
A HANDSOME GIFT. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 5. At a meeting of the Canterbury Land Board to-day, Mr. George Ross, of Washdyke, the vendor of the Seaforth Settlement, which has been purchased by the Government for the purpose of settling returned soldiers, informed the Board that he would waive half the cost of growing a wheat crop on the estate,, and throw in the growing oat crop as a free gift to the discharged soldiers who might take up the land. As there are about 85 acres of wheat and between 50 and CO acres of oats coming on the estate, this is a very handsome gift to the returned men who get the sections. ANOTHER GIFT. CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 5. Mr. H. Stonycr, land and estate agent, of Tiniaru, who acted as agent in the buying of a section at Rosebank for L. Bennett, a discharged soldier, notified the Board that he would make a free gift; to the transferee, of his commission earned in the transaction, to enable the soldier to get a better start
