THE SOUND OF GUN FIRE.
Some Parisians affirm that after midnight, when all is silent in the capital, they can hear the guns roaring on the western front. Seeing that the nearest firing limit of gun sound is about forty miles, there is no accounting for the supposed phenomenon. Experiments have, however, been made from the south-western part of the city, which prove that in certain climatic conditions, and by adopting the redskins’ system of applying one’s ear to the ground, the sound of the Cannon is audible. As for those who profess to hear GO miles it is suggested that they be told off to listening posts ahead of the great battle line. Nevertheless, the scientist, il. Bigourdan, made an interesting statement at the Academy des Sciences recently, which offered a new problem as to the transmision of sound. Having distinctly heard the Report of guns svcen miles south of Paris', M. Bigourdan was not a little surprised to ‘discover that at points several kilometres nearer the front the sounds wmrc inaudible. Thus the hypothesis advanced by the learned Frenchman that there can exist a zone of silence between two zones of sound# is being studied.
