SIR THOMAS MACKENZIE.
EXTENSION OF OFFICE DESIRED. v LONDON, Sept. 20. The announcement that Sir Thomas Mackenzie’s extension of office has expired lias created spculation in AngloNew Zealand circles as to his possible successor. The gnral opinion is that there is unlikely to be an immediate change, in view of the many special problems arising out of the war requiring careful handling. The High Commissioner’s staff was recently weakened by the breakdown of some of the most valuable officers. This is voiced as another reason against an •immediate change in the position. Now Zealand soldiers in Britain and France •appreciate the manner Sir Thos. Mackenzie is carrying for their interests, and are likey to depreeat any change in the High Commissioncrship during the war. It is pointed out that the main concern of New Zealand after the war will be the dcvelopmnt of trade, extending markets, seizing new ones,, picking up disjointed commercial connections, and reporting on questions of finance reorganisation. STATEMENT BY HON. ALLEN. WELLINGTON, Sept. 20_ Hon. J. Allen, questioned to-night regarding the cable about the High Commissionefship, said Sir Thos. Mackenzie’s terra expired some time ago, but it was extended indefinitely. The cabled statement that the extension, had expired was incorrect.
