“GERMANY CANNOT WIN.”
Swedish business* interests, which are' generally supposed to be favourable to Germany, as being their principal customer, have been greatly impressed by a remarkable editorial in the “Affarsvarlden, ” the leading trade journal of Sweden, in which Swedes are warned that it is time for them to realise that the outcome of the war cannot be favourable to the Central Powers. “Prom the very beginning it has been pointed out,” says the article “that for Germany the food question was to have a decisive influence on the war. The food situation in Germany is bad; much worse than the Swedish people generally think. Swed ish conceptions as to how peace wn? be concluded have not taken su/ticiently into consideration the importance of the campaign of starvation against Germany. We will not attempt to prophesy on the conclusion of peace, but it is important for our business men, irrespective of sympathy or prejudice, not to be too sure cf
their calculations, as there may be a surprise in store for them. The Cen tral Powers cannot obtain a peace advantageous to them. It may seem out of place to discuss these things in u business paper, but the subject is one of the decisive issues of the war, and all business speculation must adapt itself to the outcome of the war.”
