BURNED BY SULPHURIC ACID

SERIOUS ACCIDENT ON THE MONOWAI EIGHT MEN SENT TO HOSPITAL. AUCKLAND, his day. While watersiders were handling drums of sulphuric acid on the steamer Monowai to-nijgfat, one of the drums burst at the bung, throwing acid in the stream for about 20 feet. Five ,of the watersiders who were endeavouring to avoid the fumes slipped to the deck, as did also a number of others who rushed to their assistance. As a result 13 men were burned by the acid, eight being now inmates of the hospital, while five were treated as outpatients. The men in hospital were burned about the bodies, five seriously They include chief officer McLean of the Monowai, the remainder being watersiders. McLean is not seriously injured. The most seriously injured are Coutts (a single man) and Falkner (who is married.) (Later Telegram) By the explosion of sulphuric acid on the Monowai, in" addition to C. Falkner and J. Coutts, who were very seriously injured, the victims included G. Jones, aged 42, married, injured on the face one eye, both arms, back, thigh and right leg; J. Anderson, 69, married, injuries to face and ~ botn eyes; H. Barnes, 50, married, injuries to face and both eyes. The other three are J. Jones, G. Mitchell and McLean (chief officer of the Monowai) were slijgjhtly injured. Five men sustained minor injuries.
