WELSH RETAINS TITLE. CHARLIE WHITE DEFEATED. NEW YORK, Sept. 4. The keenest interest was displayed to-day in th e two matches for the world’s light-weight and featherweight championships. The lightweights, Freddy Welsh, of Britain, holder, and Charlie White, of Chicago, challenger, was fought at Colorado Springs,, the match being scheduled for twenty' rounds. The crowd at the ringside was so great that the grandstand collapsed, forty of the spectators being injured, many seriously. Welsh started favourite at 6 to 5 on. The champion started aggressively, and landed several blows at White’s kidne3 r s, but on the whole the first four rounds were even. The next three rounds were marked by clinches and in-fighting, neither having any advantage till the eighth, which was Welsh’s round. Hr th e 12th round White frequently uppercut Welsh, and had the best of the round. In the remaining rounds Welsh had a little the better of the fighting, and the match, which went the full distance, was awarded to him by the referee. The Kibane-Chaney match for the feather-weight championship, was fought at Cedar Point, Ohio, and was scheduled for fifteen rounds. Th e was disappointing. The first round was slightly in Kibane’s favour, while the second was even. The fight ended suddenly in th e third, when Kilbane knocked out Chaney with a left to the jaw.
