CHINA AND JAPAN.
A DANGEROUS ATMOSPHERE. PEKING, Sept. 4. As the outcome of the Chengehatun incident Japan has presented to China four ‘demands, as follows: —(1) Dismissal of the Chinese officers who commanded the troops; (2) withdrawal of Chinese troops in the district; (3) indemnification of the families of dead Japanese; (4) granting to Japan cf police right in inner Mongolia. Chinese officials regard the demands as tantamount to the elimination of Chinese authority in Inner Mongolia. WASHINGTON, Sept. 4. Unofficial reports show that a statement appeared in Chinese newspapers accusing Japan of sending arms to brigands in Inner Mongolia. This was considered serious. The charge was denied by the Japanese. Other reports state that the Japanese are provoking disorders in various parts ot China with a view to causing, clashes with the Japanese and grounds for, diplomatic protests and demands. State officials interpret Japan’s demands as possibly containing elements of a serious disturbance in the political situation in the Orient.
