TREASURED TRINKETS.
"COUNTRY GIRL'S" GIFT. EVOKES GENEROUS OFFERS. A FUND OPENED. The gift to the Serbian Relief Fund by an anonymous country girl of her entire collection of trinkets, which she described as "all precious gifts from my own beloved people," has prompted several offers to contribute to a separate fund to be credited to the donor so that her pathetic gift may be returned to her.
Recently it was announced that two offers (£1 and one of 10/-) bad beer, received to start the fund, and this morning the secretary of the Relief Fund, Mr G. L. Scansie, received an offer of £25 from an Auckland gentleman conditional upon the trinkets being returned to their owner. In view of this the trustees of the fund have decided that the jewellery cannot be retained, and are inviting those who have made the offers to pay the cash into the Town Hall as the commencement' of a little sub-fund which it is hoped will be something commensurate with the spirit of trie girt. "The offers already received," commoned the Mayor of Auckland (Mr J. H. Gunson), who is one of the treasurers of the fund, "offer an oppor tunity for others to contribute to the fund, thereby helpingt its primary object, the relief ,of the stricken Serbians, and of appreciating the spirit of self-sacrifice shown by the girl .sending the trinkets. The amount received in this way will be accounted for separately and so acknowledged, and the amount in the aggregate will be credited to "A Country Girl." In view of the conditions attaching! to the offers so far received, the trinkets wijl not be sold, for no doubt the money subscribed in this way will warrant the giver accepting the return of her donation." Gifts to be credited to "A Country Girl" should be forwarded to the Mayor's secretary at the Town Hall. The trinkets are; feeing exhibited in the window of IJr Geo.- Queen Street, Auckland..
