War economies in England have so reduced the demand for eggs that they are now cheaper in the United States, whence a large proportion of supplies were drawn, than has been the case for many years.
The "Manchester Guardian'' states that it is believed in Free Trade circles that Mr Asquith's reference to fairly apportioning the new economic policy among all classes of the community foreshadows the Australian policy of combining a tariff with high wages.
The breeding of ferrets has bejn a village industry in Great Britain almost from time immemorial, but the demand for the little creatures had fallen off during recent years. Nov.', however, owing/ to the insistent call for ferrets to kill the rats which swarm in the trenche s in France and Flanders, the demand has jumped suddenly to far in excess of the supply, and prices have soared accordingly.
The Wanganui and Raetehi Chamber of Commerce are taking joint action in an endeavour to have the telephone bureau hours between the two centres made from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the present hours being 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. At the meeting of the Council of the Chamber last night it was stated that the connection with many inland : bureaux was not possible between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mr L. Bassett said the question was who was using the wires during those hours, a time when commercial firms did their business. Taihape business men might ask similar questions wltn respect to local telephones.
