Shannon fared badly in yesterday's gale. A portion of the roof of a new house was blown off and landed 120 yards away. The occupant removed removed his family, and a little later the house was blown off the piles and collapsed. Many trees were blown down, and about 30 chimneys wore levelled.

The heaviest storm in twenty years raged yesterday. Low-lying ground was flooded, and several buildings threatened to collapse but no serious damage is yet reported.

THE GALE AT WANGANUI

HARBOUR BOARD DREDGE SUNK

WANGANUI. This Day

A heavy south-easterly gale continued throughout the night. The Harbour Board’s old dredge, valued at about £SOOO, moored to Castlecliff Wharf, sprang a leak at 4 o’clock this morning and sank in 30 feet of water an hour later. No great difficulty in refloating is anticipated.
