PROGRESS STATEMENT.

The latest progress statement issued by the Discharged Soldiers’ Information Department give s details of the register up to August Ist. The number of names on the register on that date totalled 5,236, 3,509 men having been disposed of, 699 being men returned by recent transports, and 1,028 being the name s of men whose cases are now being considered. There are at present 310 names on the employment register, there beingi four unplaced men in tne Wellington District. As usual, there are no Taihape men waiting to be placed. The Mayor (Mr A. L. Arrowsmith) is at present attending the Conference of Patriotic Societies in Wellington.

Recently a local resident decided to cut down some large pine trees whlcn were standing on his property, and with a view to this end he interviewed a man who made application for the work. “Can you keep a saw?” said the prospective employer. “Yes,” was tne ready response, “but the trouble is I have nowhere to keep it.” That the Discharged Soldiers’ Information Department is doing good work is proved by the fact that to date 815 returned soldier s have been placed in employment. So far, 110 men have drawn sections of land.
