THE PRESENT POSITION.

AUSTRIANS IN A PRECARIOUS STATE. A SPLENDID SUMMARY. Received 5-5 p.m., July 9. LONDON, July 9. Russia’s gigantic offensive continues to progress. The present position may be summarised as follows:—Kuropatkin resumed tremendous attacks on the Riga-Dvinsk front against Hindenburg.. The Russians blocked the Gulf of Riga against a hostile fleet, and were thus enabled to employ the warships’ guns against the Germans for miles inland. Evert’s attack on the centre extends north and south of Baranovitschi, Avhere Prince Leopold of Bavaria has hitherto strongly resisted. The Russian attacks are here developing favourably on a hundred miles front.

Southward, Linsingen has been gradually forced back by Bnusiloff’s right. The Russian left, under Letch. itsky, routed the enemy on the right bank of the Dniester. This, together with the cutting of an important railway connecting Hungary via the Gablouitza Pass with the Galician system, is imperilling Bothmer’s army, which has been holding its ground on an eighty miles front for weeks. The Russians are now within range of Delatyn Junction, which is second only in importance to Kolomea.
