REASON FOR AUSTRIAN RETREAT. Received 5-5 p.m., July 9_ ROME, July’ 9. An Austrian communique states: Our troops on the Styr salient at Kplki, after holding their own for a month against enemy forces which have increased three to five-fold in superiority, received instructions to withdraw from their first lines for fear of being surrounded.
