PARLIAMENT.
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. WELLINGTON, July 4. The Legislative Council met at 2-3 U, and immediately adjourned. HOUSE OE REPRESENTATIVES. The House of Representatives met at 2.30 p.m. On the motion of the Prime Minister, the armendments made by the Legislative Council in the Discharged Soldiers' Settleemnt Act 1916 were agreed to. The Military Service Bill as amended was received from the Legislative Council. Mr Allen indicated the nature of the amendments, and moved that they bo considered next day. This was agreed to. in reply to a question the Minister said that where men could justify their absence by documentary evidence, such cases were always given favourable consideration. The third reading of the Land and Income Tax Bill was carried on the voices. Mr Payne took exception to the exemption of go 1 dunning companies from income tax. He suggested that taxaion should be continued, and the proceeds handed over At 10.48 the House went into committee of supply on the _Estimates, class 15 (Education) £1,407,857, coming under discussion. The first item, head office (£14,002) was nassed at 12.50. The next : t n m, elementary education (£945.500) was passed.
