OFFICERS AND MEN.
THEIR RELATIVE TREATMENT
PROTEST BY THE HON. GILBERT CARSON.
WELLINGTON. June 30
In a speech on the Military Service BiH, in the Council this evening, the Hon. Gilbert Carson said he did not see why there should be so much difference between officers and men in regard to food, clothing and pay as now existed. He did not see why officers should not undergo the same deprivations as the men.
Sir Francis Bell: Who is going to exert discipline? The Hon.* Gilbert Carson : The officer. 'Sir Francis Bell: We'l, then, there must bo a distinction. The Hon. Carson said of course there must be a distinction; but it was unnecessary that officers should have finer food and finer clothing than the men in order to preserve discipline.
