All roads were lined with lorries and cars of every description. The gigantic labour of transferring half a million men proceeded for weeks. Hundreds of guns were dragged up seemingly inaccessibble mountains over improvised roads. When the guns opened fire from concealed positions, the Austrian advance was broken in a single day, and a rout began under a hail of shells. The only chance was instant retreat, otherwise the Austrians between Posina and Asiago soil’d have been annihilated
