RECRUITING IN CANTERBURY.

A SURPLUS FOR. THE IS^HS. CHRISTCHURCH. June 26. The week-end official reports of the state of recruiting in the various groups in the Canterbury military dis-ti-ic shows that the district has a surplus of 107 fit infantry men for the 18th Reinforcements, to go into camp this week. In the Christchurch area there is a snip!us of 54 men. Timaru has 45 over the quota required. Kaiapoi has 20, and Nelson has eight. On the other hand, Greymouth has a deficiency of 20. It i.s the intention of the Defence Department to send the surplus infantrymen into camp with the quota. In other branches of the service hero are plenty of fit men waiting for places in future quotas from the district.
