THE OPOURI ACCIDENT.
THE NAUTICAL INQUIRY. OF FICERS’ CERTIFICATES' RETURNED. CHRIsjk’HUR CH, The inquiry concerning. the accident to the steamer Opouri on April 25 th last, while 011 her passage from Grcymouth to Lyttelton. was resumed at L’vttelton today before Mr T. A. B. Bailey, SAL Captains Murray and Hutchinson acted as nautical assessors. The finding of the court was as follows The Opouri was hound from Greymouth to Lyttelton, and after clearing Cape Campbell, met a southerly gale and sea, and in ordei to escape the force of the latter she was taken close iu-shore. The master was following the usual practice, and did not appear to have gone closer in shore than was the case with other vessels of similar tonnage. The vessel struck a submerged object, which, in the opinion of the Court, was a rock. The Court is satisfied that the master mod a 1! necessary precautions in navigating the ship, and ordered that the certificates of Captains Pearson and Brown should he returned. No order was made in regord to the costs.
