SUGAR AND FLOUR.
QUESTION IN PARLIAMENT WTLLINGTON, Juno 14. In reply to Mr R. Fletcher’s question in the House as to whether ruwill see that the New Zealand Sugar Company dos not increase th c price of sugar, the Prime Minister’ states that the matter is receiving the serious consideration of tire Government. It is well, however, to remember that so far as sugar is concerned,- New Zealand is an importing country, ru> sugar being produced here. In the House of Representatives a few days ago, Mr Dickie asked the Minister of Agriculture: Whether it is a fact that a cargo of about 500 ton:-; of Tasmanian flour has been sold to New Zealand at £9 5s f.o.b. Tasmanian ports which will cost £ll 10s delivered in New Zealand; and, if this is correct, will the Government take steps to see that the growing of wheat will only be carried on at a loss'? The Hon Mr MacDonald (Minister of Agriculture) replied this afternoon: The Government has no information as to the sale referred to. The Customs returns up to May 2.S include no large shipments of flour from any part of the Commonwealth recently. Small quantities received have, of course, paid the duty of Is per 1001 b, plus 1 per cent primage.
